The story behind Minalkhaleej
Introduction: A Khaleeji Abaya, Reimagined in Baghdad
If you have ever tried to find high quality khaleeji abayas in Baghdad, you already know it can be frustrating. Abayas are a familiar part of life in Iraq, but the kind of premium, elegant, lightweight Gulf abayas you see in places like Doha or Dubai are not easy to find- and if you do find them, they aren’t exactly good value. In Baghdad, most women settle for what is available, mass-produced pieces with heavy fabrics, stiff fits, and designs that have not evolved in years. Or even ones that are basically made out of plastic,
For many, abayas in Iraq are simply a necessity. But what if they could also be something you genuinely enjoy wearing? What if they were not just traditional garments, but expressions of comfort, pride, and understated luxury?
That question led me to create Minalkhaleej. The name is a reflection of both its origin and mine; “Mina” from my own name, and “from the Gulf” in Arabic. The brand was born from a personal journey that began in the UK, passed through Qatar, and found its purpose in Baghdad.
This is not just a story about clothing. It is a story about culture, comfort, and discovering a better way to wear something deeply familiar. It is the story of how one abaya became a conversation starter, a gift, a request, and eventually a growing brand.
When Comfort Meets Culture: My First High Quality Khaleeji Abaya
It might surprise you that the idea to wear an abaya came from my husband. He is not someone who gives fashion advice. In fact, he usually says yes to ‘Do I look good in this’ before I have even finished asking for his opinion. So when he suggested I try wearing one, I was confused.
The suggestion came after a conversation with one of his local colleagues in Qatar. She wore gym clothes underneath her abaya and joked about how easy it made her day. While he had to wear a suit and carry a gym bag to work, she transitioned effortlessly from the office to her workout without changing clothes. It was not about tradition for her—it was about convenience.
At the time, I had just joined him in Qatar. He had already been living there for more than a decade. I had never worn an abaya in the UK, and like many Western-raised women, I thought of it as something restrictive or old-fashioned. But after some encouragement, I decided to try one from a boutique in Doha.
The moment I put it on, I realised that annoyingly- he was right (for the first, and probably last time)
It was not just about modesty. It was about ease. I could step out to the mall, attend a dinner, answer the door for a talabat delivery, or even go to a wedding, all without needing to change. It felt elegant without being fussy. It made sense for the climate, the culture, and my lifestyle. And most importantly, it was genuinely comfortable.
What started as a small change in my wardrobe soon became a daily habit. I began to love the feeling of slipping into something that made me feel covered, graceful, and confident. The Gulf abaya had won me over completely.
From Qatar to Baghdad: The Moment It Became a Brand
On a trip back to Iraq, I packed a few abayas to give to my aunts and cousins as gifts. I was not planning to start a business. I just wanted to share something that had become meaningful to me (both small and light which is perfect when giving gifts).
But their reaction was stronger than I expected.
They were amazed by the difference in quality. The fabric was soft and breathable. The tailoring was sleek but modest. Even the women who usually avoided abayas were curious. One cousin said, “This is not like the ones we find here. It feels so light.”
That moment stayed with me.
Women in Baghdad are used to abayas that are either overly stiff or overly shiny. Many are thick, unflattering, and uncomfortable. The pieces I had brought with me were completely different. They were subtle but refined. They looked and felt premium. And people noticed.

Soon after, I started getting messages through friends and family. Could I bring more next time? Could I get one in black with wide sleeves? Was there something more suited for weddings?
It started with a few pieces for my aunt, then one for a bride-to-be, then a practical one for a university student who wanted something sleek for everyday wear. One by one, I realized I was curating a mini collection—different styles for different lives, but all built around the same idea.
That is how Minalkhaleej came to life. A brand that began with a suitcase of abayas and a desire to share something beautiful with the women I love.
The Foundation of Minalkhaleej: Quality, Quality, Quality
While the brand was born from a story, it is built on something even more important—an obsession with quality. Every Minalkhaleej abaya begins with three non-negotiables: the material, the cut, and the craftsmanship.
The Material: Selected with Purpose
We spent months testing fabrics before finding the right ones. Our materials are soft yet structured, light yet fully opaque, and breathable in both hot and humid climates. Whether you are walking through the souq in Baghdad or attending an event in Doha, the fabric will not cling, wrinkle, or wear out quickly.
These are not experimental textiles. They are tried and tested fabrics chosen for comfort and durability. We do not name-drop the type of fabric just for effect—we let the quality speak for itself. When you wear a Minalkhaleej abaya, you feel the difference instantly.
The Cut: Designed for Real Women
A beautiful fabric means nothing without the right cut. That is why every piece is designed to move with you—not against you. We offer styles that are flowy and feminine, as well as structured coat-cuts that feel polished and professional.
Every abaya is designed to flatter without clinging. And yes, they all come with pockets, because a woman should not need a handbag just to carry her phone or keys. These small details make a big difference in everyday wear.
Whether you are stepping out for errands or dressing up for a gathering, our cuts are made to fit your life.
The Craftsmanship: Made in the Gulf, For Women Everywhere
All Minalkhaleej abayas are produced in the UAE or Qatar, by skilled tailors who specialize in Gulf modestwear. These are not factory-made pieces. Each garment is carefully constructed and individually checked for quality.
From the weight of the hem to the way the inner seams are finished, we make sure that each abaya meets the expectations of women who know what premium really feels like. The result is a piece that lasts. It does not lose its shape, it does not fade in a few washes, and it looks as refined on day one as it does after months of wear.
Every Woman, Every Style
Although Minalkhaleej began with gifts for family, the line has naturally grown to reflect the variety of women who wear our abayas.
My aunt preferred something more traditional and elegant. My cousin loved an abaya with contrast details. A bride-to-be chose a special occasion piece with dramatic sleeves. Each style had its own character, but they all followed the same standard of quality.
We will go into more detail about these variations in a future blog, including customer favorites and styling inspiration. But for now, the focus is simple, no matter the cut or style, we never compromise on quality.
Conclusion: Quality from the khaleej, With Love
Minalkhaleej is more than a fashion brand. A story of how something as simple as an abaya can carry so much meaning—comfort, tradition, elegance, and identity.
What started with a suggestion from my husband. Grew with encouragement from my family. And now, it is finding its way into the wardrobes of women who want something better- especially those looking for a high quality abaya in Baghdad or anywhere across Iraq.
This is just the beginning. In future blog posts, I will share more about our creative process, what makes our materials so special, and how we continue to grow a brand rooted in authenticity.
For now, if you are looking for an abaya that reflects the elegance of the Gulf with the practicality of everyday life, Minalkhaleej is here.
